Remembering Iwo Jima

An Airman assigned to the 18th Civil Engineer Squadron walks next to a Japanese coastal ship-mounted gun at the base of Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima, Japan, March 23, 2022. Two days preceding the battle of Iwo Jima, a Japanese crew fired a similar gun at an approaching U.S. ship, causing a chain reaction of preemptive strikes. This gave away the positions of several other defensive positions, leading to the early destruction of about a dozen similar guns. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Sebastian Romawac)
