Remembering Iwo Jima

A U.S. Marine memorializes the lives lost during the Battle of Iwo Jima at Iwo Jima, Japan, March 23, 2022. A huge carrier force of Marines landed on this beach on the southeastern front of the island during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The black terrain is made up of volcanic ash that made it difficult for Marines to secure their footing while traversing inland. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Sebastian Romawac)
